Arrowpoint adds O’Connor Asia head and China investment team

Related Topics

Asia-focused hedge fund manager Arrowpoint Investment Partners is strengthening its investment and management ranks with a series of hires from UBS’s former O’Connor platform, including the unit’s regional head and its China long-short team, according to a report by Bloomberg.

John Bradshaw, who spent several years leading O’Connor’s Asia business, is set to join Arrowpoint in Singapore in late September as deputy chief executive. Tan Jia, who previously headed O’Connor’s China long-short strategy, has already joined Arrowpoint alongside four members of his investment team, according to a person familiar with the moves.

The hires follow UBS’s sale of the O’Connor business, which managed about $11bn, to Cantor Fitzgerald last year. The transaction ended UBS’s roughly 30-year ownership of the hedge fund operation as the Swiss bank sought to reduce exposure to businesses requiring significant capital.

The subsequent restructuring of O’Connor has created an opportunity for Asian hedge fund managers to recruit experienced investment professionals. Arrowpoint and Dymon Asia Capital have both moved to take advantage of the availability of senior talent from the platform.

Arrowpoint, which was launched in 2024 by former Millennium Management Asia co-chief executive Jonathan Xiong, has the backing of Blackstone, Canada Pension Plan Investment Board and an investment vehicle linked to Temasek Holdings.

Bradshaw is expected to play a key role in managing Arrowpoint’s continued expansion. The firm’s headcount is forecast to approach 200 by the end of 2026, while Bradshaw will also have responsibility for portfolio managers being developed for more senior positions.

Before joining O’Connor, Bradshaw worked on UBS’s proprietary trading operation.

Tan brings specialist experience in Chinese equities, having previously worked at Och-Ziff Capital Management before taking charge of O’Connor’s China investment team across Singapore, Hong Kong and Shanghai.

The team managed approximately $1 billion across a standalone strategy, institutional separately managed accounts and capital allocated from O’Connor’s global multi-strategy fund.

O’Connor’s China Long/Short Alpha Strategies UCITS Fund launched in 2021 and employed a low-net-exposure approach, balancing long and short positions to limit directional market risk. The strategy generated gains in four of its first five years, including during the market disruption caused by Covid and China’s regulatory crackdown on several industries. It lost 2.3% in 2023 before being closed earlier this year.

Tan’s team will initially operate within Arrowpoint. The hedge fund and some of its investors are expected to back a standalone spinout of the group planned for 2027, according to the source.

Arrowpoint currently manages around $2bn and could reach approximately $3bn by the end of the year. The firm is also planning to add almost 10 investment teams during the remainder of 2026, taking its total to about 30.
