Billionaire Michael Platt’s hedge fund BlueCrest Capital Management has added José Arivar De Lira Junior as a senior portfolio manager in London, according to a Companies House filing on 24 June.

Junior, who also announced the news on his LinkedIn profile, was most recently head of FICC trading at BNP Paribas, where he managed a team of five traders and was based in São Paulo, Brazil.

He started his career as a fixed income trader at HSBC, focusing on Brazilian interest rate swaps and bonds. After HSBC, he became a partner at FRAM Capital, where he traded interest rates, FX, commodities and equities globally, later holding senior roles at Deutsche Bank and Rabobank.

Last month, the Financial Times reported that BlueCrest was planning to add 30 portfolio managers to its 170 “pods”, or trading teams, spanning areas like macro, commodities and systematic strategies.

Meanwhile, Bloomberg revealed in January that the firm gained 20.3% for 2023, marking BlueCrest’s lowest annual returns since Platt’s decision in 2016 to focus on managing his and his partners’ own capital.

Junior declined to comment.
