Balyasny Asset Management has reshuffled its applied artificial intelligence team, moving its head of research into a trading-focused role within fundamental equities and recruiting two technology specialists, according to a report by eFinancialCareers.
Peter Anderson, previously head of research for applied AI, has been appointed head of autonomous strategies within the hedge fund's fundamental equities division. Anderson joined Balyasny from Google and previously worked in equity research at Credit Suisse before completing a PhD in machine learning.
The new role signals a potential expansion of AI-driven trading within Balyasny's fundamental equities business, which operates alongside a separate systematic trading division led by Francine Fang.
Balyasny has appointed Gearoid Murphy, a former senior researcher at Google's innovation lab X, to replace Anderson as head of applied AI research. Based in San Francisco, Murphy previously served as chief technology officer of an AI project focused on improving global supply chain efficiency and holds a PhD in evolutionary algorithms.
The hedge fund has also recruited Itamar Kestenbaum as a senior AI engineer in New York. Kestenbaum joins from Meta, where he worked as a senior infrastructure engineer, having previously held technology roles in Israel.
