Hao Dong, a former commodity portfolio manager at Singapore sovereign wealth fund GIC, is preparing to launch Windrise Capital, a new hedge fund focused on commodities and other global markets, with plans to raise between $200m and $300m, according to a report by Bloomberg.
The new fund received in-principle approval from the Monetary Authority of Singapore earlier this month and is targeting a launch in the first quarter of 2027, Dong said.
The 37-year-old manager plans to use data covering Chinese mines, metal smelters, factories and warehouses to identify changes in economic activity and inform the fund's investment decisions.
While commodities will be central to the strategy, Windrise will also trade currencies, bonds and equities. Dong said the fund could allocate up to 30% of its portfolio to Chinese commodity futures.
Dong began his career at Edesia Asset Management, the hedge fund arm of commodities group Louis Dreyfus Company, before moving to Chinese investment firms Shenzhen Kaifeng Investment and Shanghai Chaos Investment Group, founded by prominent commodity trader Ge Weidong.
Windrise's founding team also includes Kewei Yang, who most recently served as managing director for global macro at Tairen Capital, and Dapeng Chen, a former metals strategist at Chinese gold and copper producer Zijin Mining Group, according to Dong.
