Stanley Sheriff, a former Goldman Sachs macro trader who joined Balyasny Asset Management in Dubai last year, has reportedly retired from the hedge fund industry aged 33, following an eight-year career on the buy-side, according to a report by eFinancialCareers.
Sheriff joined Balyasny in May 2025 after spending less than a month at Taula Asset Management, the macro hedge fund founded by former Millennium portfolio manager Diego Megia. His rapid move between the two firms attracted attention at the time, highlighting competition among multi-strategy hedge funds for experienced macro traders.
Prior to his hedge fund career, Sheriff spent four years at Goldman Sachs between 2014 and 2018, having graduated from the London School of Economics with a first-class degree.
According to the report, Sheriff is not believed to be seeking another position and is understood to be taking time away from the industry, although his longer-term plans remain unclear. Neither Sheriff nor Balyasny responded to requests for comment.
His departure follows several other recent exits from Balyasny, including London-based portfolio manager James Watson, who reportedly returned to Millennium Management after overseeing a 20-person investment team.
Former Goldman Sachs traders Aditya Singh and George Tyrrell have also left the firm, while regulatory filings show that former Symmetry portfolio manager Peter Blandford departed on 9 October.
The departures come amid continued competition for investment talent among major multi-strategy hedge funds, where experienced portfolio managers and traders remain highly sought after.
